Opening the discussion, Owen noted that food embodies a city’s cultural identity, while digitalization serves as a powerful tool to unlock its tourism potential. Together, they strengthen local tourism ecosystems and help cities expand international cultural exchange through distinctive culinary experiences.
Angela Moreno Ramón shared how Seville has leveraged its rich history and Mediterranean culinary heritage to strengthen its tourism offering. Through digital storytelling, international food festivals, and integrated culinary routes linking historic sites, wineries, and traditional eateries, the city has transformed local cuisine into a globally recognized tourism asset.
Miodrag Popović highlighted Belgrade’s efforts to engage young travelers through Balkan street food culture. Supported by social media marketing, smart tourism platforms, and AI-powered visitor services, the city has built a vibrant culinary ecosystem centered on local businesses and authentic experiences while expanding its appeal to international markets.
Representing Thessaloniki, Vasilios Vasiliadis emphasized the importance of balancing innovation with authenticity. As a globally recognized gastronomy destination, the city uses digital maps, tourism apps, and online storytelling to connect visitors with local producers, historic restaurants, and culinary traditions. He noted that technology should enhance, rather than replace, genuine cultural experiences.
Frédéric Ada-Kouassi discussed Côte d’Ivoire’s efforts to promote its tropical ingredients and culinary heritage to Chinese travelers. Through food exhibitions, digital campaigns, and tourism partnerships, the country is building a comprehensive culinary tourism ecosystem while using food as a bridge for deeper China–Africa tourism cooperation.
Drawing on global industry trends, Liu Dong noted that culinary tourism has become one of the fastest-growing segments of the travel industry. He emphasized the importance of protecting and developing local food IP through geographical indications, cultural heritage recognition, digital tools, and international content collaboration, turning local flavors into long-term tourism assets.

The forum concluded with a shared view that while landmarks and attractions can be replicated, local flavors remain a city’s most distinctive cultural signature. As digital technologies continue to break down geographic barriers, culinary experiences are becoming increasingly important in shaping destination identity and fostering international tourism cooperation.
